Antonio Létourneau. Organist, pianist, teacher, b Quebec City 28 Aug 1885, d Montreal 29 Oct 1948. As a child he was a soloist in Notre-Dame Church in Montreal. He began his musical studies in 1900 with Caroline Racicot and as early as 1904 was a pupil of R.-O.

Yvette Lamontagne. Cellist, teacher, b Montreal 26 Dec 1898, d Montreal 18 June 1992. She studied for three years on scholarship with Gustave Labelle at the McGill Conservatory.

(J.-) Alexandre (Zénon) Laurendeau. Oboist, clarinetist, b Lachenaie, near Montreal, 13 Dec 1870, d Montreal 13 Jul 1933. He was clarinetist in the Montreal Concert Band under the direction of Edmond Hardy and, after 1890, in the Sohmer Park orchestra. He later studied oboe with a Father Geay.

Art (Arthur Garfield) Hallman. Singer, arranger, saxophonist, pianist, b Kitchener, Ont, 11 Jan 1910, d Richmond Hill, Ont, 5 Dec 1994. Raised in Vancouver, Hallman began studying piano at 10 and saxophone at 18, and played on CNR steamship cruises to Alaska, then on radio station CJOR.

Yvon Barette. Pianist, b Hull, Que, 1 Aug 1910. After taking private lessons 1917-20 he studied 1928-38 with Harry Puddicombe at the Canadian Conservatory of Music (Ottawa).

Arthur Benjamin. Pianist, composer, teacher, b Sydney 18 Nov 1893, d London 10 Apr 1960. Having established an international reputation as a pianist and composer in his native Australia and then in England (where he lived after 1921), Benjamin first visited Canada in the 1930s as an adjudicator.

Alain Lamontagne. Harmonica player, composer, singer, storyteller, actor, b Verdun (Montreal) 14 Jul 1952. He began playing harmonica in his teens.

Daoust, Yves. Composer, teacher, b Longueuil, near Montreal 10 Apr 1946. Daoust began studies in piano at age seven, wrote a film soundtrack for "prepared" piano at 16, and at 19 completed his first electronic work, for a Berlin theatre.

Alex (Charles) Kramer. Songwriter, pianist, b Montreal 30 May 1903, d Fairfield, Connecticut, 10 Feb 1998. He studied at the McGill Conservatory, played piano in Montreal movie houses, and conducted orchestras on CFCF and CKAC radio before moving in 1938 to New York.

Annie (Margaret) Jenkins (b Lampman). Pianist, organist, choir director, teacher, b Morpeth, near Chatham, Upper Canada (Ontario), 14 May 1866, d Ottawa 12 Jul 1952. A sister of the poet Archibald Lampman, she studied piano with J.D.

Avrahm (Abraham) Galper. Clarinetist, teacher, writer, b Edmonton, 16 Aug 1921. He lived in Palestine until 1946, studying clarinet there at 17 with Tzvi Tzipine and later in New York with Simeon Bellison and in London at the RAM with Frederick Thurston.

Audrey Johannesen (née Johnston), pianist, teacher (born 12 September 1930 in Regina, SK; died 21 May 2015 in Tsawwassen, BC). ATCM 1944, LRAM 1950, premier prix Brussels 1953. She studied with Frances England and Lyell Gustin in Regina and with Max Pirani at Banff.

Alfred (Eduard Emmerich) Rosé, conductor, composer, pianist, music therapist (born 11 December 1902 in Vienna, naturalized Canadian 1955; died 7 May 1975 in London, Ont). His mother was Gustav Mahler's sister.

André-Sébastien Savoie. Pianist, accompanist, coach, teacher, b Montreal 25 Jul 1935. At first a pupil of Charles Reiner, André-Sébastien Savoie continued his studies 1952-8 at the McGill Conservatory.
