Tillson Lever Harrison, physician, surgeon, army officer, adventurer (b at Tillsonburg, Ont 7 January 1881; d near Kaifeng, China, 10 January 1947). Also known as a writer, raconteur and humanitarian, Tillson Harrison has been touted as Canada's second Norman BETHUNE and the model for Indiana Jones.

Charles Alexander Allard, businessman, medical doctor (b at Edmonton 19 Nov 1919; d 11 Aug 1991). Allard graduated in medicine from University of Alberta in 1943. From 1955 until 1969 he was a surgeon and then chief surgeon at the General Hospital in Edmonton.

Richard Edward Taylor, CC, physicist, educator (born 2 November 1929 in Medicine Hat, Alberta; died 22 February 2018 in Stanford, California).

Archibald Edward Malloch, surgeon (b at Brockville, Canada W 14 June 1844; d at Hamilton, Ont 6 Aug 1919).

Abraham Groves, physician (b at Peterborough, Canada W 8 Sept 1847; d at Fergus, Ont 12 May 1935). After graduating from the Toronto School of Medicine in 1871, Groves practised in Fergus for 60 years.

Frédéric ('Fred') Pelletier (Peltier). Choirmaster, critic, teacher, composer, physician, b Montreal 1 May 1870, d there 30 May 1944; MD (Montreal) 1895, honorary D MUS (Montreal) 1937.

Howard Charles Clark, chemist, university administrator (b at Auckland, NZ 4 Sept 1929). Educated at University of Auckland and Cambridge, he came to BC in 1957 and rapidly established a reputation for original work in organo-metallic, co-ordination and fluorine chemistry.

Harold Joseph Bernstein, physical chemist (b at Toronto 26 Aug 1914; d at Florida 14 Dec 1984). After graduating with a PhD from the University of Toronto in 1938, he moved to the University of Copenhagen on a scholarship.

Erik the Red (Eiríkr rauða in Old Norse and Eiríkur rauði in modern Icelandic, a.k.a. Erik Thorvaldsson), colonizer, explorer, chief (born in the Jæren district in Norway; died c. 1000 CE at Brattahlid, Greenland). An Icelandic settler of modest means who was exiled for his involvement in a violent dispute, Erik the Red rose in status as he explored Greenland and founded the first Norse settlement there. One of his sons, Leif Eriksson, led some of the first European explorations of the east coast of North America, including regions that are now part of Arctic and Atlantic Canada.

Roger James Rossiter, biochemist, neurological scientist (b at Glenelg, Australia 24 July 1913; d at Helsinki, Finland 21 Feb 1976). Rossiter pioneered studies of the nervous system's chemical composition and was prominent in the development of biochemistry in Canada.

Vincent Lam, writer, medical doctor (b at London, Ont 5 Sept 1974). Lam's family is from an expatriate Chinese community in Vietnam. Lam, however, was born in Canada and raised in the country's capital.

William Evans, journalist, agronomist (b at Carana, Ire 22 Nov 1786; d at Côte St-Paul, Canada E 1 Feb 1857). Evans immigrated to Lower Canada in 1819 and settled on a farm in Côte St-Paul near Montréal.

Frank Leith Skinner, farmer, horticulturalist (b at Rosehearty, Scot 5 May 1882; d at Dropmore, Man 27 Aug 1967). After schooling in Aberdeen,Scotland, he immigrated to Dropmore in 1895 and ran a large grain and stock farm with his brother.

Owen Beverly Beattie, anthropologist, professor (b at Victoria, BC 3 June 1949). A professor of anthropology at the University of Alberta, Beattie gained international attention in 1984 for his investigation of the 1845 Franklin expedition disaster.

John William Tranter Spinks, CC, chemist, educator (born 1 January 1908 in Norfolk, England; died 27 March 1997 in Saskatoon, SK). He moved to Canada in 1930 to join the staff of the University of Saskatchewan, where he earned an international reputation as a teacher and researcher.

Edgar William Richard Steacie, physical chemist, scientist-statesman (b at Westmount, Qué 25 Dec 1900; d at Ottawa 28 Aug 1962).

Donald Frank Stedman, scientist (b at Tunbridge Wells, Eng 4 Apr 1900; d at Ottawa 2 May 1967). Primarily a chemist, he was one of the earliest staffers of the NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (1930).

Henry Taube, chemist, Nobel laureate (born 30 November 1915 in Neudorf, SK; died 16 November 2005).

Thorbergur Thorvaldson, "TT," cement chemist (b in Iceland 24 Aug 1883; d at Saskatoon 4 Oct 1965). Settling with his parents near Gimli, Man, he went on to attend U Man and Harvard (MSc, PhD). In 1919 he became head of the dept of chemistry at U Sask, and in 1945 the first dean of graduate studies.

Hardolph Wasteneys, professor of biochemistry (b at Richmond, Eng Apr 1881; d at Toronto 1 Feb 1965). As a boy Wasteneys went to Australia and found employment in government laboratories dealing with water purification. He moved to California about 1909 to study this subject further.
