John Joseph Heagerty, physician, public-health official, historian (b at Montréal 26 Dec 1879; d at Ottawa 7 Feb 1946). Entering federal service as a bacteriologist in 1911, Heagerty joined the new Department of Health in 1919 and became director of public-health services in 1938.

Henry Youle Hind, geologist, naturalist (b at Nottingham, Eng 1 June 1823; d at Windsor, NS 8 Aug 1908). Hind was educated at the Nottingham Free Grammar School, a Leipzig commercial college, and Caius College, Cambridge, but graduated from neither of the latter.

Donald Olding Hebb, psychologist (b at Chester, NS 22 July 1904; d at Halifax, 20 Aug 1985). He was a brilliant pupil who completed grades 1 to 4 in one year and 5 to 6 the next. But school proved too easy, and when he graduated from Dalhousie, his record was undistinguished.

Charles Francis Hall, Arctic explorer (b in Vermont 1821; d in Greenland 8 Nov 1871). An engraver by trade, Hall was fascinated by accounts of the search for Sir John FRANKLIN and in 1860, as a private citizen, he went by whaling ship to Baffin I.

Bernhard Adolf Hantzsch, explorer, ornithologist (d near the mouth of Hantzsch R, NWT June 1911). Hantzsch sailed with a German ornithological expedition to the eastern Arctic in 1906 and during that summer explored and collected specimens along the coast of Ungava Bay and northern Labrador.

Mario Bunge, (b at Buenos Aires, 1919). After training as a physicist (doctorate in mathematical physics, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, 1952), Mario Bunge turned toward philosophy, which he taught at the U. of Buenos Aires from 1957 to 1963.

Frank Harris McLearn, palaeontologist (b at Halifax 27 Feb 1885; d at Ottawa 7 Oct 1964). Educated at Dalhousie and Yale, he served on the GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF CANADA from 1913 to 1952.

Richard Lankaster Hearn, civil engineer, administrator, nuclear power pioneer (b at Toronto 18 May 1890; d there 24 May 1987).

Gerhard Herzberg, physicist, Nobel laureate (born 25 December 1904 in Hamburg, Germany; died 3 March 1999 in Ottawa, ON).
