Coureurs des bois were itinerant, unlicenced fur traders from New France. They were known as “wood-runners” to the English on Hudson Bay and “bush-lopers” to the Anglo-Dutch of New York. Unlike voyageurs, who were licensed to transport goods to trading posts, coureurs des bois were considered outlaws of sorts because they did not have permits from colonial authorities. The independent coureurs des bois played an important role in the European exploration of the continent. They were also vital in establishing trading contacts with Indigenous peoples.

Sylvia Burka, speed skater, cyclist, coach (b at Winnipeg 4 May 1954). Through hard work and determination, she overcame a visual handicap to become a world-class athlete in 2 sports. Despite losing an eye in a childhood accident, Burka was Canada's national junior SPEED-SKATING champion by age 15.
Robert Palmer Howard, physician, educator, medical administrator (b at Montréal 12 Jan 1823; d there 28 Mar 1889). Best remembered as a superb teacher, Howard combined enthusiasm with sincerity and dignity, inspiring his pupils with his own zeal and love for medicine.
John M. (Marchant) Whyte. Evangelist, hymn writer, singer, b Paris, Canada West (Ontario), 8 Jun 1850, d Toronto 17 Mar 1927. He studied at the University of Toronto and devoted himself to evangelistic and temperance work.
Albert Greer. Tenor, choir conductor, teacher, b Toronto 23 Feb 1937; BA (Toronto) 1960, ARCT Gold Medal 1964. He studied with Aksel Schiøtz at the University of Toronto and was a member 1956-60 and 1964-7 of the Festival Singers.
Alfred (Ernest) Whitehead. Composer, organist, choirmaster, teacher, b Peterborough, England, 10 Jul 1887, d Amherst, NS, 1 Apr 1974.
W. (William) Ray (Raymond) Stephens. Music publisher, tubist, bassist, b Caerphilly, England, 12 Jan 1916. He studied music at the TCM (now RCMT) and for tenor years served as a military band musician.
The Toronto Oratorio Society. One of several large choirs in early 20th-century Toronto. It was founded in 1910 and survived 15 years despite a period of inactivity 1912-14. It was an outgrowth of the choir at the Jarvis St Baptist Church, where its conductor, Edward Broome, was organist.

Arthur Oliver Wheeler, surveyor, mountaineer (born at Lyrath, Ireland 1 May 1860; died at Banff, Alta 20 March 1945). Qualifying in 1881 as Ontario land surveyor, he also obtained Dominion (1882), Manitoba (1882), British Columbia (1891) and Alberta (1911) credentials.
