Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, governor general of Canada from 1872 to 1878 (born 21 June 1826 in Florence, Italy; died 12 February 1902 in Bangor, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom). Dufferin and his wife, Lady Dufferin, were the first viceregal couple since Confederation to become prominent figures in Canadian society, touring all provinces and meeting with Canadians from a wide variety of regions and social backgrounds. Dufferin set key precedents for future governors general with his extensive travel and granting of academic and athletic honours to Canadians.

A. Allison Dysart, lawyer, politician, judge, premier of New Brunswick (b at Cocagne, NB 22 Mar 1880; d at Moncton, NB 8 Dec 1962). Educated at Ontario Agricultural Coll, St Joseph's University and Dalhousie, he practised law in Bouctouche.

In 1948 he entered national politics as party leader, but he failed in 2 elections to mount an effective challenge to the Liberal administration. He resigned as leader 1956 and was appointed Canadian high commissioner to London, England, in 1957 - the last distinction in a noteworthy public career.

 Fredrik Stefan Eaton, merchant (b at Toronto 26 June 1938), great-grandson of Timothy EATON and grandson of John Craig EATON; president of the T. EATON CO LTD.

The introduction of the Eaton catalogue in 1884 gave Canadians, particularly those in pioneer farming communities, access to a variety of merchandise.

Jasmine Dubé, actor, playwright, director, author (b at Amqui, Que 11 Apr 1957). Cofounder and artistic director of the Théâtre Bouches Décousues, Jasmine Dubé has maintained an artistic commitment to young audiences for 30 years.

Hugh Fisher, canoeist (b in New Zealand 1 Oct 1955). He finished first in the K-2 500 m and K-4 500 m events at the 1976 national championships and was 1979 and 1980 outrigger world champion. He missed the 1981 season

Abraham Feinberg, né Nisselevicz, rabbi, singer, peace activist (b at Bellaire, Ohio 14 Sept 1899; d at Reno, Nev 5 Oct 1986). Raised and educated in the US, he held rabbinical pulpits there in the 1920s.

Robert George Ferguson, physician (b at Joliette, ND 12 Sept 1883; d at Regina 1 Mar 1964). Ferguson studied arts, theology and medicine at the University of Manitoba and in 1917 became medical superintendent of the Saskatchewan Anti-tuberculosis League at Fort Qu'Appelle.

Lorenzo Ferrer Maldonado, apocryphal navigator, adventurer (b in Spain; d 1625). In 1601 he submitted to King Philip III of Spain a document about his purported 1588 voyage through the NORTHWEST PASSAGE from east to west.

Jacques Ferron, doctor, writer (b at Louiseville, Qué 20 Jan 1921; d at St-Lambert, Qué 22 Apr 1985). His father was a Liberal Party organizer, and Ferron (brother of Marcelle FERRON) was early attracted to political opposition.

Douglas Mason Fisher, politician, journalist (born 19 September 1919 in Sioux Lookout, ON; died 18 September 2009). Educated at the University of Toronto, Queen's and the University of London, he served overseas during WWII. Known as "The Giant Killer" after his first political campaign and smashing victory over C.D.

Emil Ludwig Fackenheim, philosopher, theologian (b at Halle, Germany 22 June 1916; d at Jerusalem 19 September 2003). Educated at the University of Halle, and ordained a rabbi in 1939, he fled Germany after a short imprisonment in a concentration camp.

Ronald Gilmour Everson, poet (b at Oshawa, Ont 18 Nov 1903; d at Burlington, Ont. 16 Feb. 1992). Educated at U of T and Osgoode Hall, Everson practised law before moving into public relations.

John Skirving Ewart, lawyer, publicist (b at Toronto, 11 Aug 1849; d at Ottawa 21 Feb 1933). Educated at Upper Canada College and Osgoode Hall, Toronto, Ewart moved to Winnipeg to practise law in 1882. He was counsel for the French-speaking minority in the MANITOBA SCHOOLS dispute, 1890-96.

William Paterson Ewen, painter (born 7 April 1925 in Montréal, QC; died 17 February 2002 in London, ON).

Walter Hamilton Ewing, trapshooter (born 11 February 1878 in Montréal, QC; died 25 June 1945 in Montréal). Ewing won the gold medal in individual trap shooting at the 1908 Olympic Games in London, England.

Sam Etcheverry, football player (born 20 May 1930 in Carlsbad, New Mexico; died 29 August 2009 in Montréal, QC). Etcheverry turned professional with the Montreal Alouettes in 1952, and later earned his nickname of "The Rifle" as a quarterback.
