Charles Burchill Lynch journalist, author (b Cambridge, Mass 3 Dec 1919; d at Ottawa 21 July 1994). Lynch came to Canada at the age of 2 weeks and was educated at Saint John, NB. At 17 he began his newspaper career as a reporter with the Saint John Citizen.

Charles George Horetzky, photographer, explorer, civil servant (b at Edinburgh, Scot 20 June 1838; d at Toronto 30 Apr 1900). An employee of the Hudson's Bay Co, he was at Fort Garry in 1869 during the RED RIVER REBELLION.

James Archibald Houston, artist, author, filmmaker (b at Toronto 12 Jun 1921; d at New London, Conn 17 Apr 2005). Houston studied art in Toronto at the Ontario College of Art before serving in WWII.

Randolph Stanley Hewton, painter (b at Maple-Grove, Qué 12 June 1888; d at Belleville, Ont 17 Mar 1960). He studied under William BRYMNER in Montréal (1903) and at the Académie Julian in Paris (1908-13). In Paris he met A.Y. JACKSON (1912), whose influence on his style would be considerable.

Guy Frégault, historian (b at Montréal 16 June 1918; d at Québec C 13 Dec 1977). Frégault pursued classical studies at Saint-Laurent and Jean-de-Brébeuf colleges in Montréal. He then enrolled in Université de Montréal and eventually completed his PhD in history at Loyola University, Chicago in 1949.

Humphrey Lloyd Hime, photographer, surveyor, businessman, financier (b at Moy, Ire 17 Sept 1833; d at Toronto 31 Oct 1903). Noted as a pioneer photographer on the Canadian prairies, Hime was photographer and surveyor on the

Efa Prudence Heward, painter (born 2 July 1896 in Montréal, QC; died 19 March 1947 in Los Angeles, California). Heward specialized in portraits of women, despite the popularity of landscape painting during her lifetime.

John Bernard Boyle, painter (b at London, Ont 23 Sept 1941). Self-taught, Boyle, whose aim in youth was to be a writer, began painting around 1962 with the support of friends Greg CURNOE and Jack CHAMBERS. Boyle favours primary colours and bold handling.

Mario Bernardi, conductor (born at Kirkland Lake, Ontario 20 Aug 1930, died in Toronto 2 June, 2013). Considered the leading Canadian-born conductor of his generation, Bernardi has appeared widely in Canada and abroad.

Gérard Bessette, novelist, critic (born at Ste-Anne-de-Sabrevois, Qué 25 Feb 1920, died Kingston, Ont, 21 Feb 2005). Bessette graduated from the École normale Jacques-Cartier in 1944 and obtained a doctorate in French literature from Université de Montréal in 1950.

Francis (née Frances) Marion Beynon, journalist, novelist, suffragist (born 26 May 1884 in Streetsville, ON; died 5 October 1951 in Winnipeg, MB). Francis Marion Beynon has been noted for her courage as a pacifist, her outspoken anti-religious views and her anti-racism.

Sheila Burnford, author (b in Scotland 11 May 1918; d at Bucklers Hard, Hampshire, Eng 20 Apr 1984). Educated at private schools in England, France and Germany, Burnford served as a volunteer ambulance driver during WWII before immigrating to Canada and settling in Port Arthur, Ontario.

Marjorie Wilkins Campbell, author (b at London, Eng 1901; d at Toronto 23 Nov 1986). Campbell's career as a writer of historical fiction reflects her affinity for the early Canadians, developed from childhood after her family immigrated to the Saskatchewan Qu'Appelle Valley in 1904.

Hoedeman revised his methods and style in Mascarade (1984). In Charles et François (1987), he touched on the theme of old age and in La boîte (1989) on that of apprenticeship and discovery. In this fable, he mixes puppets, real action shots and computer-generated images.
