Humphrey Stephen Mumford Carver, architect, community planner, urban philosopher, author (b at Birmingham, Eng 29 Nov 1902; d at Ottawa 19 Oct 1995). Educated in England, he became known as a strong advocate of a public-housing policy soon after his arrival in Canada in 1930.

In the early years, Heppner's voice was that of a lyric tenor - he won the CBC Talent Competition with Don Ottavio's aria, "Il mio tesoro," from Mozart's Don Giovanni.

Sidney Robert Carter, art and antique dealer, photographer (b at Toronto 18 Feb 1880; d at Montréal 27 Mar 1956). Carter was an early advocate of pictorialism in photography, and by 1901-02 was exhibiting in London, the US and Canada.

Carman conducted a syndicated newspaper column, essays from which were reprinted in 3 volumes, notably The Kinship of Nature (1903). With Mary Perry King, he collaborated on The Making of Personality (1908) and in that year moved to New Canaan.

Jean “Ti-Jean” Carignan, CM, fiddler (born 7 December 1916 in Lévis, QC; died 16 February 1988 in Delson, QC). Jean Carignan was one of the greatest folk fiddlers of the 20th century and the leading exponent of the Celtic tradition in French Canadian fiddling.

Owen Underhill. Composer, conductor, teacher, flutist, b Regina 26 Jan 1954; B MUS (Victoria) 1975, MA (Stony Brook) 1978. Owen Underhill was raised in Edmonton and Victoria, BC.

  Ernest Cormier, architect and engineer (b at Montréal 5 Dec 1885; d there 1 Jan 1980). The son of a physician, Cormier studied civil engineering at Montréal's École polytechnique.

Dwayne Lyle Congdon, mountaineer and guide (b at Lethbridge, Alta 7 Aug 1956). From a love fostered by his parents on camping trips in the Rockies, Congdon decided in his early 20s to become an Alpine guide.

Willie P. (William Patrick) Bennett. Singer-songwriter, guitarist, mandolin and harmonica player, b Toronto 26 Oct 1951, d Peterborough, Ont, 15 Feb 2008. Willie P. Bennett began writing songs in his teens; 'White Line,' first recorded in 1973 by David Wiffen, was an early effort.

Hugh Le Caine, physicist, designer of electronic-music instruments, composer (b at Port Arthur [Thunder Bay], Ont 27 May 1914; d at Ottawa 3 July 1977). He was trained as a physicist at Queen's and later at Birmingham University (Eng).

Ludmilla Chiriaeff, née Otzup, dancer, choreographer, teacher, director (b at Rigà, Latvia, 10 Jan 1924; d at Montréal 22 Sept 1996).

Robert Choquette, poet, novelist, playwright (b at Manchester, NH 22 Apr 1905; d 22 Jan 1991). His family moved to Montréal in 1914, where he did his classical studies at Collège Saint-Laurent (1917-21) and Loyola College (1921-26).
