UZEB. Montreal jazz band in the fusion style. It was formed in 1976 in Drummondville, Que, by the guitarist Michel Cusson (b there 22 Jan 1957) and others. Following its debut 14 Aug 1976 at St-Euzèbe, Que, it took the name Eusèbe-Jazz, subsequently shortened to UZEB, and soon moved to Montreal.

George Ryga, playwright, novelist (b at Deep Cr, Alta 27 July 1932; d at Summerland, BC 18 Nov 1987). Raised in a Ukrainian farm community in northern Alberta, Ryga received little formal education but nevertheless established himself as a prominent Canadian writer.

Félix-Antoine Savard, priest, writer, educator (b at Québec C 31 Aug 1896; d there 24 Aug 1982). After spending his childhood and youth in the Saguenay, Savard discovered and fell in love with the Charlevoix region, which he called Québec's metaphysical county.

Margaret Marshall Saunders, writer (b at Milton, NS 13 Apr 1861; d at Toronto 15 Feb 1947). She moved with her family to Halifax at age 6. At 15 she attended boarding school in Edinburgh, then studied French at Orléans. On her return home she taught school for a short time.

Jean-Louis Roux, theatre director, writer, actor (born 18 May 1923 in Montréal; died 28 November 2013 in Montréal). A doctor's son, Roux completed his BA at Collège Sainte-Marie and then enrolled in medicine at Université de Montréal (1943-46).

MacDermot, (Arthur Terence) Galt. Composer, pianist, b Montreal 18 Dec 1928; BA English and history (Bishop's) 1950, B MUS (Cape Town) 1953? He was raised in several Canadian cities, including Toronto (where he attended Upper Canada College, of which his father, T.W.L.

John Alonzo Russell, architect, educator (b at Hinsdale, NH 28 Oct 1907; d at Winnipeg 28 Dec 1966). A prominent figure in the arts in Winnipeg, he came to University of Manitoba in 1928 with degrees in architecture from

Kenneth (George) Mills. Conductor, composer, poet, lecturer, b St Stephen, NB, 25 Jan 1923, d 8 Oct 2004.

Stuart Rosenberg, rabbi, author (b at New York C 5 Jul 1922). Educated at Columbia U, MA (1948), PhD (1953), and the Jewish Theological Seminary, rabbi (1945), MHL (1949), DD (1971), Rosenberg came to Canada in 1956. He has had 2 pulpits: Beth Tzedec (1956-73) and Beth Torah (1982- ).
