Gordon Murray, surgeon (b at Stratford, Ont 29 May 1894; d at Toronto 7 Jan 1976). Murray's medical training was interrupted in 1917 when he became an artillery man and went overseas to fight at Ypres, the Somme and Vimy Ridge.

Charles A. (Augustus) Sippi. Educator, organist-choirmaster, physician, b Hyderabad, India (Pakistan), 25 Jul 1844, d London, Ont, 15 May 1906; D MED (Dublin), honorary MA (Kenyon College, Ohio). Though of Italian descent Sippi was third-generation Irish.

Jonathan Odell, doctor, clergyman, spy, poet, politician (b at Newark, NJ 25 Sept 1737; d at Fredericton 25 Nov 1818). He was trained in medicine but entered the Church of England ministry.

Gerald O'Reilly, physician (b at Ballinlough, Ire 11 Aug 1806; d at Hamilton, Canada W 26 Feb 1861). After medical studies in Dublin, Ire, and London, Eng, he immigrated in 1833 to Hamilton, where he was a prominent practitioner.

Jacques Genest, physician, medical researcher (b at Montréal 29 May 1919), founder of the Institut de recherches cliniques in Montréal.

Edward Kielley (or Kielly), surgeon, naval officer (b at St John's c 1790; d there 8 Mar 1855).

Aser Rothstein, physiologist (born 29 April 1918 in Vancouver, BC; died 4 July 2015 in Guelph, ON). He contributed enormously to the fields of cellular physiology and toxicology.

John Gunion Rutherford, veterinarian, administrator (b at Mountain Cross, Scot 25 Dec 1857; d at Ottawa 24 July 1923). A graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College 1879, he practised in Woodstock, Ont, and in the US and Mexico, and settled in Portage la Prairie, Man, 1884.

Alton Goldbloom, pediatrician, educator, author (b at Montréal 23 Sept 1890; d there 3 Feb 1968). A 1916 McGill medical graduate, Goldbloom pioneered modern pediatrics in Québec and eastern Canada. Following internships, including 2 years in New York, he began to practise in Montréal (1920).

In 1933 Mary Percy Jackson published her letters to England, 1929-31, in a book entitled On the Last Frontier: Pioneering in the Peace River Block.

Charles Alfred Hodgetts, physician, public-health official, teacher, administrator (b at Toronto 23 Aug 1859; d at London, Ont 3 Apr 1952).

John Joseph Heagerty, physician, public-health official, historian (b at Montréal 26 Dec 1879; d at Ottawa 7 Feb 1946). Entering federal service as a bacteriologist in 1911, Heagerty joined the new Department of Health in 1919 and became director of public-health services in 1938.

Donald Olding Hebb, psychologist (b at Chester, NS 22 July 1904; d at Halifax, 20 Aug 1985). He was a brilliant pupil who completed grades 1 to 4 in one year and 5 to 6 the next. But school proved too easy, and when he graduated from Dalhousie, his record was undistinguished.

Marilyn Trenholme Counsell, physician, politician, lieutenant-governor of NEW BRUNSWICK (b at Baie Verte, NB). She grew up in the coastal village of Baie Verte, New Brunswick, and received her high school education at the Port Elgin Regional Memorial School where she graduated as valedictorian.

Jessie Catherine Gray, surgeon, lecturer, researcher (b at Augusta, Georgia 26 Aug 1910; d at Toronto 16 Oct 1978).

John Sebastian Helmcken, surgeon, politician (b at London, Eng 5 June 1824; d at Victoria 1 Sept 1920).

Louis-Édouard (pseudonym 'Bon vieux temps') Desjardins. Physician, folklorist, bass, choirmaster, teacher, composer, b Terrebonne, near Montreal, 10 Sep 1837, d Montreal 2 Mar 1919; MD (Victoria College, Cobourg, Ont) 1872.

Clarence Meredith Hincks, physician, mental-health reformer (b at St Marys, Ont 8 Apr 1885; d at Toronto 17 Dec 1964). He received his MD from the University of Toronto in 1907 and, finding general practice unsuitable, obtained a part-time post as medical inspector for Toronto schools.
