William T. (Willie) deWit, boxer, lawyer, judge (born 13 June 1961 in Three Hills, AB).

Pierre Lueders, bobsledder (born 26 September 1970 in Edmonton, AB). Lueders is one of Canada's most decorated bobsledders, with two Olympic medals and numerous top finishes at world events in both two- and four-man sleds.

Ronald Lancaster, football player, coach (b at Fairchance, Pa 14 Oct 1938; d at Hamilton, Ont 18 September 2008). He quarterbacked the OTTAWA ROUGH RIDERS from 1960 with Russ JACKSON and was later traded to Saskatchewan (1963-78).

A poised passer, strong runner and capable leader, Jackson finished his 12-year career with 1341 completed passes (53%) for 23 341 yards and 184 touchdowns; he also rushed for 5045 yards while scoring 55 touchdowns and 330 points. In his last season, 1969, he led Ottawa to a Grey Cup championship.

Barbara Aileen Wagner, figure skater (b at Toronto 5 May 1938). Wagner and partner Robert Paul formed the outstanding Canadian figure skating team that dominated the international pairs event 1957-62.

In Dec 1992 she finished third in Vail, Colo, and in Feb 1993 she missed winning in the downhill at Veysonnaz, Switz, by 9/100ths of a second, finishing in second place. Her most successful season came in 1992-93, and she finished the year as one of the top-ranked downhillers in the world.

Herman Linder, rancher, rodeo competitor, promoter (b at Darlington, Wisconsin 5 Aug 1907; d at Cardston, Alta, 18 Jan 2001). Born the son of a circus performer who emigrated from Switzerland to North America, young Linder rode yearling steers and unbroken range horses for amusement.

A few weeks later, he won his first race. It was held between the towns of Ste-Madeleine and St-Hyacinthe. In early 1932, he registered for his first snowshoe race.

Joseph André Bernard Geoffrion, "Boom Boom," hockey player (b at Montréal 16 Feb 1931; died on 11 March 2006 at Atlanta, USA). Geoffrion is known by hockey fans as the inventor of the slapshot.

Although an outstanding all-round athlete, his chief claim to fame is his gold medal victory in golf in the 1904 Olympics at St Louis. At age 38 George Lyon took up golf and between 1898 and 1914 won the Canadian Amateur title 8 times.

She won Canada's only 1976 Olympic gold medal - in the giant slalom on 4 Feb - for which she was considered a long shot against gold-medal winning German skier Rosi Mittermaier. In so doing she became the youngest-ever gold medalist in skiing to that date.

Kenneth John Read, alpine skier (b at Ann Arbor, Mich 6 Nov 1955). He was raised in Calgary and began skiing at 3 and competing at 8.
