In the heart of the ​Gaspé Peninsula​, 196 km east of Rimouski, is Parc national de la Gaspésie (established 1981, 802 km2). First established in 1937 by means of special legislation, the park has in the past bowed to mining and forestry pressures. It is now completely protected through the park's Act.

University of Calgary. Non-denominational institution founded in 1945 as the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta and granted autonomy as the University of Calgary in 1966. It has developed a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.

Belledune, NB, incorporated as a village in 1968, population 1548 (2011c), 1711 (2006c). The Village of Belledune was reincorporated in 1994 to include Jacquet River, Armstrong Brook, Archibald Settlement, Sunnyside, Becketville and Mitchell Settlement.

During its early history Strathroy suffered a number of devastating fires. In 1868 a blaze wiped out a considerable portion of Strathroy's business section. Several fires in manufacturing plants in the late 1890s and an agricultural depression caused a period of economic downturn for the town.

Capital city of British Columbia. Established in 1843 on the southern tip of Vancouver Island as a Hudson's Bay Co trading post called Fort Victoria, the town had 148 adult inhabitants by 1855.

Winnipeg Auditorium. Winnipeg's main concert hall complex from 1932, when it opened, until 1968, when it was supplanted in that function by the Manitoba Centennial Concert Hall. It was designed jointly by three architectural firms - Northwood & Chivers, Pratt & Ross, and J.N.

The Art Gallery of Windsor began in 1943 in Willistead Manor, where exhibitions borrowed from other galleries and organizations could be displayed. Incorporated in 1944, the gallery soon began building its own collection and presenting exhibitions and education programs.

History In 1667, René-Robert Cavelier de la Salle became seigneur of the land of present-day LaSalle. In order to avoid the Lachine Rapids, traders, explorers and Indigenous people portaged along a path that would become LaSalle Boulevard.

Saint-Raymond's industrial activity has always been closely linked to the forest industry. Sawmilling, pulp and paper, wood products, house and cottage manufacturing as well as charcoal production, are still key economic activities.

Niverville, Manitoba, incorporated as a town in 1993, population 3540 (2011c), 2464 (2006c). The Town of Niverville is located 40 km south of Winnipeg.

North York, Ontario, Urban Community within the city of Toronto. North York was a city (incorporated from 1979 to 1998) until it was amalgamated into the new megacity of TORONTO in 1998.

NORWEGIAN settlers arrived in the area at the beginning of the 20th century. The community that sprang up to service the area was originally called Mandel after their hometown in Norway.

The NORTH WEST COMPANY had a post at the Portage as early as 1808 and the HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY soon followed suit. Here the Athabasca and Mackenzie River brigades exchanged goods and furs with the La Loche brigade.

The town began with an edict by King Louis the XIV of France on 29 June 1711 which established the parish of St-Joachim de Pointe-Claire. A civil parish was established 11 years later on 3 March 1722. On 1 July 1845, the parish came under the control of the clergy.

Verdun is one of the province's oldest municipalities. It was founded in 1671 by Zacharie Dupuis, one of the first landholders on the Island of Montréal. He named Verdun after his native village of Saverdun in France.

The municipality has its origins from 2 lumber communities which developed in the early 1800s, Wheatland and Watkins Mill. In 1873, Tourville Lumber Mills arrived in the area and began purchasing land for trees it shipped to its sawmill in Pierreville, downstream on the Rivère Saint-François.

In 1880, Rosemère was primarily an agricultural community. The beauty of the Laurentides region was later discovered and Rosemère established itself as a holiday destination.

Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, incorporated as a rural municipality in 1917, population 2671 (2011c), 2812 (2006c). The Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet is located 100 km northeast of Winnipeg on Lac du Bonnet

In the early 1800s the territory was opened up to exploit the forest resources. By the early 1820s the area around Lac Beauport was known as Waterloo Settlement. The first settlers were of English origin. In 1853 the parish municipality of Saint-Dunstan-du-Lac-Beauport was created.

In 1863 the area became known as the Parish of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts. The first settlers named it in memory of their native parish of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière in France. In 1968, it became the city of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts.
