Alexander Bradshaw Campbell, lawyer, politician, premier of PEI 1966-78 (b at Summerside, PEI 1 Dec 1933). In 1966 Campbell became one of the youngest (age 33) premiers ever elected. In 1969 his government and Ottawa signed a Comprehensive Development Plan under which large-scale farms, tourism and school consolidation were encouraged; the number of ports designated for government assistance was reduced; and incentives were offered to attract nonresource-based manufacturing. After a decade of substantial expenditure, mounting criticism and few signs of sustained development, Campbell abandoned reform rhetoric and advocated an ecologically balanced, sustainable CONSERVER SOCIETY. His government also enacted controls over nonresident ownership. In 1978 Campbell was appointed to the PEI Supreme Court.
