William Carter. Choir conductor, organist, pianist, composer, b London 7 Dec 1838, d ?. He studied organ with his father and Ernst Pauer and later was organist at several churches in England. For one year (1859) he exchanged positions with his brother Henry, organist at the Anglican cathedral in Quebec City. While there he conducted what possibly was the largest Handel festival held in Canada up to that date; it included a performance of Judas Maccabeus on 13 Apr 1859, the centenary of Handel's death. His compositions include the cantata Placida, anthems, songs, partsongs, and choral arrangements.
