Joseph (Giuseppe) Masella. French hornist, teacher, b Montreal 28 Jul 1925, d Montreal (Dorval), 2 Oct 1996; premier prix french horn (CMM) 1946. After some instruction from the clarinetist Joseph Moretti, he studied at the CMM 1943-6 with Harry Berv.

Joseph (Giuseppe) Masella. French hornist, teacher, b Montreal 28 Jul 1925, d Montreal (Dorval), 2 Oct 1996; premier prix french horn (CMM) 1946. After some instruction from the clarinetist Joseph Moretti, he studied at the CMM 1943-6 with Harry Berv. He was principal horn with the MSO and the CBC Montreal orchestra 1943-69 and a member of the CBC 'Little Symphonies' Orchestra for several years. With the pianist John Newmark, he joined the Masella Wind Trio (see Rafael) to record Beethoven's Quintet, Opus 16 in 1951 (RCI 48). The five also performed in Ottawa and at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as part of the Montreal Festivals in August 1960. With his brothers Paul and Giulio he premiered Michel Perrault'sSerenade per tre fratelli on CBC TV in 1964. He taught at the CMM 1946-87, the CMQ 1946-64, and at the Conservatoire de Trois-Rivières 1965-86. Paul Marcotte, who attained his premier prix in 1977, was one of his pupils, as was Marc Bouchard, principal horn of the Luxembourg Philharmonic.
