Jeffrey (William) Anderson. Radio producer, critic, b Winnipeg 26 Apr 1928; BA (Winnipeg) 1951; M PH history (London) 1960. Though not a practising musician, he studied organ and piano with Hugh Bancroft and became an authority on British composers. He worked 1951-3 in the promotions department of Boosey & Hawkes in London. He deputized for Kenneth Winters 1959-60 as music critic for the Winnipeg Free Press and succeeded him in 1966, continuing in the position until 1968. His main career has been with the CBC, which he joined in 1960 as a music producer for radio and TV. For TV he produced the series 'Recital' and in 1963 Gustav Holst's opera Savitri. He was the CBC's program representative in England 1968-72, supervisor of radio program evaluation in Toronto 1973-4, and national supervisor of radio arts 1975-7. He was an executive producer of serious music for CBC radio 1977-82. He planned and produced three two-hour musical documentaries: 'Ralph Vaughan Williams' in 1972; 'Gustav Holst, Planetmaker' in 1974 (winner of an Ohio Award in 1975); and 'Michael Tippett: A Composer for Our Time' in 1975. He was a faculty member 1983-90 in the School of Journalism at the University of Western Ontario, and in 1990 returned to Winnipeg to practise freelance journalism.
