Eric Stanley Wright, writer, teacher (b at London, Eng 4 May 1929). Immigrating to Churchill, Man (1951), and graduating from the University of Manitoba (Hons BA, 1957) and the University of Toronto (MA, 1961), Wright has taught at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. His series of award-winning crime novels, featuring a low-key but ironic hero, middle-aged Inspector Charlie Salter of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force, presents a cross-section of the Canadian urban social strata. Each book investigates a particular world as well as a mystery: academia in The Night the Gods Smiled (1983), the antique business in Smoke Detector (1984), innocents abroad in Death in the Old Country (1985), the world of singles in A Single Death (1986) and a PEI mystery in A Body Surrounded by Water (1987).
